What you're looking at
Every pair below is the same fixture, shot from the same camera angle before and after the job, so what you see is an honest comparison rather than a staged showroom photo next to a worn one. The before shots are not flattering on purpose — rust at the drain, crazed gelcoat, avocado tile, yellowed cultured marble — because that is what walks through the door in San Jose's postwar housing stock. The after shots are the same surface once it has been stripped, prepped, primed and sprayed with acrylic-urethane.
Drag the slider handle on each image to wipe between the two. If you are deciding whether your own tub is worth saving, these pairs are the best answer we can give: a sound fixture with a tired surface comes back looking factory-new, and it does it in one afternoon for a fraction of replacement.
Cast-iron bathtub — Rose Garden
Fiberglass shower stall — Berryessa
Porcelain sink — Naglee Park
Cultured-marble countertop — Cambrian Park
Tub-surround tile — Almaden Valley
How a one-day result is possible
The after photos are not magic; they are prep — the same prep we have run on 2,840-plus San Jose fixtures since 2015. The reason a 70-year-old tub comes back glassy is that the surface gets stripped of soap film and old coatings, chips and rust spots get filled and sanded level, and porcelain or cast iron gets an acid/silane etch so the primer has something to bite into. Fiberglass and gelcoat skip the acid and get scuff-sanded instead. Only then does the acrylic-urethane topcoat go on, in several thin coats sprayed in a controlled, dust-minimized pattern. Skip any of those steps and you get the peeling, orange-peel mess people show us from failed DIY kits.
Color changes are part of what makes the before/after so dramatic in San Jose. So much of the city's housing was built between 1945 and 1980, which means a lot of avocado, almond and harvest-gold fixtures that date a whole bathroom. Taking those to bright white — or to a soft gray for a Communications Hill condo — resets the room without touching the plumbing or the walls. Walk through our full process to see each step, and check the numbers on the pricing page.
What owners said about these results
★★★★★The before photo of our Rose Garden tub still makes me wince. The after is the tub we use every day now. Same tub, completely different bathroom.
— Lillian H., Rose Garden
★★★★★I almost replaced the whole avocado surround in Almaden Valley. They reglazed the tile white instead and saved me thousands. You truly cannot tell.
— Janet L., Almaden Valley
★★★★★Three Berryessa shower stalls turned around between tenants. The after on each one looks like a new insert went in. It did not.
— Derek P., Berryessa
Gallery FAQ
Are these real San Jose reglazing jobs?
Yes. Every pair on this page is a real fixture refinished in a San Jose home or rental, shot from the same camera angle before and after so the comparison is honest. Neighborhoods and surfaces are noted with each pair.
Will my reglazed tub really look like the after photos?
A correctly prepped and sprayed acrylic-urethane finish is smooth and glossy like the after images, with no orange-peel texture or visible seams. Results vary slightly with the starting condition, which is why we show honest before shots, not just the after.
Can you change the color, not just refresh the same one?
Yes. We routinely take avocado, almond and harvest-gold fixtures to bright white, or match a soft gray or off-white for a remodel. A deep color change may need an extra coat, which we price up front.
How long did these jobs take?
Most of the tubs, sinks and counters shown here were finished in 3 to 5 hours, same day. The surface is ready to use 24 to 48 hours after the final coat cures.
